Nursery Rhyme Breakfast

It’s what the princess was scarfing down in the kitchen while her mom the queen was in the parlor eating bread and honey:   oven-dried chunks of bread with milk poured over them, and sugar sprinkled on top.  It’s also what my own kids are having for breakfast this morning, inviting the question:  You call THAT a nutritious breakfast?

No, I don’t, but I’m serving it anyway.  I’d like to say that it’s because I’m a poetic soul, and the sugar-sparkled hunks of bread in the cereal bowl remind me of the ice-coated tree limbs glittering in our backyard this morning.  But I’ll admit that it has more to do with my having bought 64 kaiser rolls off the day-old rack of the local grocery store, at 59 cents for a bag of eight rolls.  The king in the counting house is going to be mighty pleased!

  1. It sounds much better than four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie.
